Define "Gifted"

When it comes to defining what the terms “Gifted” or “Exceptional Learner” mean, it can be tricky.  It is important that people involved with our children have an understanding of what it means.  I like the definition shared on the Gifted Canada website:

Giftedness is Asynchronous Development in which advanced cognitive abilities and heightened intensity combine to create inner experiences and awareness that are qualitatively different from the norm.  This asynchrony increases with higher intellectual capacity.  The uniqueness of the gifted renders them particularly vulnerable and requires modifications in parenting, teaching and counselling in order for them to develop optimally.  This means these children develop in an uneven manner, significantly out of developmental step with their age peers.”


Characteristics of gifted children – there can be very few, or many – every child is different.  It is interesting to learn about the variety of ways Exceptional Learners can exhibit their giftedness, or not. This article has many useful links and examples:
